Vivian Maier’s art arrives at Palazzo Pallavicini

From 7 September 2023 to 28 January 2024 the splendid setting of Palazzo Pallavicini hosts “Vivian Maier – Anthology“, the exhibition of the works of the American photographer Vivian Maier.

The exhibition has been organized and realized by Chiara Campagnoli, Deborah Petroni and Rubens Fogacci and shows the works of the archive of the Maloof Collection and the Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York.

“Vivian Maier – Anthology” is open from Thursday to Sunday, from 10.00 to 20.00.

Vivian Maier: life and works

Among the exhibitions in Bologna planned for the coming months, the one related to the story of Vivian Maier is certainly one of the most anticipated.

Known for her stunning street photography photos taken primarily in the streets of Chicago and New York City in the 1950s and 1970s, Vivian Maier has actually been in the shadows for quite some time.

The right recognition comes in fact – as often happens – after his death in 2009.
For much of her life, Maier worked as a nanny and housekeeper and took photographs as a personal hobby.

His works portray everyday life moments of ordinary people and capture spontaneous and authentic moments. The images, now visible at Palazzo Pallavicini, are characterized by a careful eye for composition and light, and often document the facets of urban life.

The discovery of his art takes place two years before Maier’s death – in 2007 – when John Maloof, a photography and local history enthusiast, buys a part of her work at an auction.

The latter’s publication of some of Maier’s photographs on the Internet suddenly attracted the attention of the public and photography enthusiasts, leading to the dissemination and recognition of the artist’s talent as a street photographer.

The story of Vivian Maier has been the subject of documentaries, art exhibitions and books, and her artistic heritage is now recognized worldwide as an important contribution to street photography and 20th century social documentation.
